Indecent Exposure/Suspicious Activity

Department: Police Department
Date: 05/19/10

On May 18, 2010, a third party notified the Marshalltown Police Department that there had been two incidents of suspicious activity and/or indecent exposure on May 16 & 17, 2010. Those incidents occurred on the bike path between 12th Street and the 6th Street softball complex.

According to the first victim, she was running on the bike path on May 16th at about 1:00 pm when she noticed two bicyclists coming up behind her, but they failed to pass for a significant period of time.  When the bicyclists passed the victim, one of the two male bicyclists made a comment to the victim that made her feel uncomfortable.  After the male passed, the victim ran into the 6th Street softball complex parking lot where she could see vehicles and from there continued on to the YMCA/YWCA.  The victim did tell officers that as she looked back to the bike path she could see the male suspect and he appeared to be waiting for her further down the bike path.  This incident was not immediately reported to law enforcement.

The second victim was eastbound on the bike path, near the little league diamonds, on May 18th at about 6:05 pm when an unknown white male exposed his genitals to the victim.  The victim continued on the bike path. According to the victim, little league baseball games were going on during the incident.  This incident was not immediately reported to law enforcement.

Prior to receiving these two reports, the Department has stepped up patrols of the bike path, but to be completely successful in reducing the incidence of crime we need the public’s help.  If citizens see something suspicious or are the victim of a crime, timely reporting to law enforcement provides the best chance of arrest.  If anyone has information on this case, or any other criminal activity, please contact the police as soon as possible.   Working in partnership with all the residents and businesses in our community can enhance public safety and reduce the fear and incidence of crime.
