Additional Charges in Shooting Case
At around 6:55 pm on February 6th the Marshall County Communications Center received a 911 call from 19 ½ N. Center St #2 reference a male who had just been shot
When officers from the Marshalltown Police Department arrived they discovered a 39 year old male, identified as Benjamin Benda, had been shot in the head. Benda was transported to the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center and from there to University of Iowa Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
The investigation identified three suspects and information provided by witnesses indicated that two suspects fled to Osceola, IA shortly after the shooting. At about 6:00 am, with the assistance of the Osceola Police Department, Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol and Division of Criminal Investigation Steven Etzen, age 27, and Shawn Doehler, age 23, were taken into custody. Etzen and Doehler were booked into the Clarke County Jail on the charge of Robbery 1st degree.

TJ Vaughn, 28, Marshalltown
Melissa Andrews, 44, Marshalltown
The investigation into this incident is continuing and more charges are expected.
The Marshalltown Police Department was assisted by the Division of Criminal Investigation, the Marshall County Attorney’s Office, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, the Osceola Police Department, and the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office
The Marshalltown Police Department received notice that Mr. Benda died at 11:37 am as a result of his injuries. After consulting with the Marshall County Attorney the Department will be charging the following;
Steven Etzen-Murder in the 1st degree (class A felony)
Shawn Doehler-Murder in the 1st degree (class A felony)
Thomas (TJ) Vaughn-Murder in the 1st degree & Robbery 1st degree (class A & B felony)
Vaughn is being held in the Marshall County jail and Etzen and Doehler will be charged with murder in the 1st degree when they are transported to the Marshall County Jail from Clarke County.
This incident remains under investigation and more arrest may be forthcoming.
